McMinnville teen arrested following park incident

A 17-year-old McMinnville boy was arrested Friday on charges that allege he pulled a knife on a 13-year-old boy at Discovery Meadows Park and stole his cell phone. The park is located at 1300 S.W. Cypress Lane.

The suspect was identified as Erik Duran. He was charged with one count each of attempted first-degree robbery, second-degree theft and unlawful use of a weapon. He was lodged in the Yamhill County Juvenile Detention Facility in McMinnville.

Police gave this account:

The victim and his mother went to the police station about 3:30 p.m. to report the incident they said occurred about 15 minutes earlier. The suspect and victim were acquaintances. They came across each other at the park and talked for a short time before the suspect displayed a knife and asked the victim what he was carrying with him. The victim said he only had a cell phone, which the suspect took from him.

Duran was contacted at his residencee. The knife and the phone were recovered.
