McMinnville, Forest Grove men die when boat capsizes

DEPOE BAY – A McMinnville man and Forest Grove resident died Friday afternoon when their boat capsized in the Pacific Ocean near Government Point (Boiler Bay), north of Depoe Bay.

The Oregon State Police identified the men as James William Warren, 81, of McMinnville, and Robert Lawrence Zimmel, 69, of Forest Grove.

OSP gave this account:

About 5 p.m., the Coast Guard received a report from a privately owned vessel that a boat had capsized and an unresponsive male was floating in the water.  The Coast Guard responded with a lifeboat and recovered Zimmel’s body.

A search of the area continued and a Coast Guard helicopter spotted Warren’s body floating in the water.

They were the only two occupants of the boat and Warren was the registered owner. Neither was wearing a life jacket, and it has not been determined why the boat capsized.

Assisting OSP and the Coast Guard with the investigation were the Forest Grove and McMinnville police departments, and Lincoln City Sheriff’s Office.
