Mac girls tennis beats Vikings on the road
Caitlan Baker defeated Margaret Connors 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to start the match for the grizzlies. Kelsey Allen lost at No. 2 singles, but Molly Olsen and Sam Purdy won at No. 1 doubles 65-4, 6-3, and Kerigan Morton and Nayelly Cervera won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to give Mac a 3-1 lead after the first four matches.
Shay Bristow won in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Veronica Marquez lost 4-6, 4-6 at No. 4 singles. The Grizzlies finished the sweep of the doubles matches with wins at No. 3 doubles by Ellie Solem and Lauren Ulvang in two sets and Julia Jacobucci and Amanda Sullivan in two sets at No. 4 doubles.
The McMinnville track team hosted Tigard on Wednesday in a dual meet at Wortman Stadium. The Grizzlies won the boys scoring 92-52 but lost the girls team scoring 81-64.
Kane Kennedy had another phenomenal meet, winning the boys 100- and 200-meter sprints as well as anchoring the Grizzlies to a win in the 4x100-meter relay. Kennedy’s time of 22.42 seconds in the 200 was the third-fastest in school history and a personal best.
On the girls side, Whitney Rich won the 1,500 and 3,000 runs, and Bethany Mohler inched closer to the school-record in the javelin with a throw of 127-07 to win. It was the fourth best mark in school history.

The McMinnville wrestling team has continued to train and compete after its wildly successful 6A state championship run in February that saw the Grizzlies win two individual state championships and have another second-place finisher. April 5-6 at the Flo Nationals in Indiana, Pa., Tiger Paasch went 2-2 in the 170-pound class and was one match from earning All-American honors. Jered Sublet was 3-2 at 138 pounds and also just missed placing in the top eight.
Mac coach Shawn Keinonen said he would also like to wish a few local businesses and family members that helped fund the trip to Pennsylvania. They include: Dean Klaus (Your Space Storage), Steve Davison (Davison Auto Parts), Thad Brill, Ty Rollins (Comfort Inn) as well as Jim Hurl and Jeff Chapman (textile graphics).
The Grizzlies then competed April 13-14 in Corvallis in the State Freestyle and Greco championships. In freestyle, Aspen Nelson finished second at 106, and Bryce Branson was second at 120 pounds. Sublet finished second at 138, and J.T. Barnes was second at 152. In the cadet division, Brian Barnes won at 195 pounds; Dalton Donaldson was second at 132 pounds, and Bobby Crowston was fifth at 145.
In the Greco division, Branson was fourth at 120 pounds, Sublet was second at 138, and Barnes was second at 152. In the Cadet Greco division, Barnes placed first at 195 pounds, and Donaldson was fifth at 132.
The Grizzlies finished sixth in the tournament for all clubs in Oregon, which Keinonen said is the highest finish in Mac history.
Other results: The McMinnville softball team has lost three games in a row since beating Newberg last week. Mac lost 13-0 vs. Glencoe in five innings Wednesday. Mac was no-hit. The Grizzlies then lost 4-0 Wednesday at Forest Grove. They play at 5 p.m. today at home vs. Century.
