Mac board to meet Monday, hear dissection appeal

McMinnville School Board will meet Monday, Jan. 28, to hear an appeal of the use of cat dissection in Mac High’s advanced placement biology class. The public session will start at 6 p.m. in the district office, 1500 N.E. Baker St.

A work session is scheduled at 7 p.m. for discussion of student behavior and subcommittee reports.

A member of the Yamhill County Cat Coalition asked the district last fall to cease using real cats in AP Biology, a high-level elective that attracts mostly students interested in health careers or veterinary medicine. She said using computer simulations and other technology would be less harmful and more effective.

She also asked the district to look at the source from which it obtains the cats, claiming the company’s methods are inhumane.

The district’s curriculum committee reviewed the practice of using real animals and decided to continue doing so. Now the board is being asked to rule on the issue.
