Linfield to host San Francisco Guitar Quartet

Linfield students will be admitted free with ID. For others, tickets run $10 at the door.

In addition, students will have an opportunity to interact with the quartet during a “Meet the Musicians” session at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Delkin Hall.

During Friday’s concert, the quartet will perform a variety of music, including classical, world and improvisation. The program will feature “Concerto for Four Guitars” by Georg Philipp Telemann; “Pacific Coast Highway” by Andrew York, a former member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet; and “Toccata” by Bryan Johanson, a music professor from Portland State University.

Founded in 1997, the San Francisco Guitar Quartet has welcomed a new member — Roberto Granados, a home-schooled 13-year-old guitarist, arranger, composer and ukulele virtuoso, who began studying classical guitar at age 6. He joins seasoned performers Mark Simons, Patrick O’Connell and Jon Mendle.

Each of the longtime members has distinguished himself as a recording artist and chamber musician through CD releases, music competititon awards and major concert appearances. All hold faculty positions in Bay Area colleges and universities.

As a group, the quartet tours both nationally and internationally. It has played on National Public Radio and syndicated radio shows such as “Classical Guitar Alive!”

The quartet is the latest in a series of musicians or groups booked for the Linfield Chamber Orchestra’s annual guest concerts. Each year, LCO plays in the fall and spring, with a guest featured at its the winter concert.

Since its inception in 1991, the Linfield Chamber Orchestra has provided Linfield students the opportunity to perform alongside seasoned musicians. But the 2012-13 concert series represents its grand finale.

Next year, the student-professional relationship will be fostered through Linfield Lively Arts, a new music series that also will also offer local classical music lovers the opportunity to hear live performance. For more information, call 503-883-2275 or visit
