Joe Paterson recalled to Diamondbacks
Paterson, an Oregon State graduate, played for the Beavers in 2006 and 2007, helping OSU win the 2007 College World Series. He was on the mound for the final out of the championship game vs. North Carolina.
Paterson was recalled after reliever Matt Reynolds went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow.
Paterson, a left-handed relief pitcher, was 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 24 relief appearances this season with Reno.
Paterson started the 2011 and 2012 seasons with the Diamondbacks, but he was demoted to Triple-A in 2012 after less than a month in 2012. In 68 games with the Diamondbacks in 2011-12, Paterson recorded one save, had a 5.40 ERA and was 0-3. He was drafted by the Giants in the 10th round of the 2007 MLB draft, but the Diamondbacks chose Paterson in the first round of the 2011 Rule 5 draft. He was the first Rule 5 selection to ever make Arizona’s Opening Day roster in 2011.
The Diamondbacks are 37-29 so far this season in the National League West and are 2.5 games up on Colorado for first place in the division. Paterson made his first appearance Tuesday vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers. He threw 1/3 of an inning, hit a batter and struck out a batter.
