Homeward Bound increases hours
Located at 10601 S.E. Loop Road, just east of the McMinnville Airport, the shelter is now open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. After-hour appointments can also be scheduled by calling 503-437-8382.
After hearing complaints that its phones weren’t being answered frequently enough, Homeward Bound has changed its procedures, Witt said. Shelter staff not only will answer, she said, but will have more information about the most frequently mentioned topics, such as how to secure spay and neutering services and what to do about neighborhood strays.
Heather Broden manages the no-kill shelter, which houses cats as well as dogs. The shelter has 17 kittens ready for adoption, in addition to adult cats, and will have a new batch of puppies ready for adoption soon.
Homeward Bound will show off puppies and kittens during Turkey Rama from the window of Willamette Valley Vineyards’ tasting room at Third and Cowls streets. The shelter also holds adoption events at Petco and Nature’s Pet on a regular basis.
Witt and Broden are the only full-time employees. Homeward Bound also has two half-time employees, who are assisted by about 70 volunteers.
A Thrift Shop operated from J&W Carstar quarters on Lafayette Avenue is a major source of funding. The organization also stages fundraising events and solicits ongoing donation of cash, equipment and supplies, including bedding, pet food and detergent.
