Grizzlies blocked by Jaguars

The McMinnville boys basketball team couldn't quite keep up with No. 5-ranked Century at home Friday, losing 68-50 to drop to 5-7 and 1-2 in the Pacific Conference.

Mac's Taylor Vicknair scored 19 points, Gage Gubrud scored 14 and Blaine Parker added 10, but the Grizzlies were outmuscled inside by Century's inside tandem of Austin Flues (6-foot-8) and Austin Sminia (6-5). Sminia scored 16 points and Flues added 12, including a dunk with 1:31 left in the fourth quarter to cap a 6-0 run that put the game out of reach.

Colson Gower had 18 points for Century and scored 13 in the first quarter, and Madison McCaffrey added 10.

Matthew Long scored four points for Mac, and Nicholas Autencio scored three points.

McMinnville kept the game close for most of the first quarter. The score was tied at eight with 3:11 to go, but Century finished the first quarter on a 9-2 run and led 17-10. The Jaguars pulled away in the second quarter and led 28-18 at the break.

Century continued to extend the lead in the third quarter. The Jaguars upped their lead to 49-35 after three quarters before the Grizzlies finally started chipping away. Gubrud led off the fourth quarter with a jumper, and Vicknair made six consecutive free throws to cut the lead to 53-43 with 4:17 remaining in the game. Gubrud hit a 3-pointer with 2:43 left that moved Century's lead to single digits for the first time since the second quarter, but Century responded with a 10-1 run to the :31.2 mark of the quarter.

The Grizzlies committed six turnovers in the game and none in the fourth quarter. Century also committed six turnovers and none in the fourth quarter.

Mac plays at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at home vs. Tigard.
