Friday afternoon, evening school activities cancelled

Dec 6, 2013

News-Register Staff

Due to extremely cold weather and snowy road conditions, McMinnville schools have cancelled afternoon and evening activities previously scheduled today.

McMinnville schools opened late today. Newberg and Dayton also were open, but Yamhill-Carlton, Sheridan, Willamina and Gaston all remained closed because of snow and ice. Amity does not have school on Fridays.

In the districts that held classes today, afternoon buses will be on snow routes.

The arctic weather is expected to continue tonight, with possible record low temperatures, and through the weekend. Lows could hit 15 degrees tonight and 11 Saturday night, with the wind chill making it feel like temperatures in the negative numbers.

Freezing fog also is in the forecast tonight and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Snow could return Monday and Tuesday, giving way to rain as daytime temperatures finally rise above freezing on Tuesday. Rain and highs in the upper 30s and 40s are predicted Wednesaday and Thursday.
