Brosius, Smith shut out Century as Mac’s bats come alive

HILLSBORO – A five-run first inning helped propel the McMinnville baseball team to a 12-0 victory over Class 6A Pacific Conference foe Century Friday night at Hillsboro Stadium.

Cameron Fox went 3-for-5 for the Grizzlies (9-2, 2-1 Pacific), while Kade Mechals went 2-for-5. Lane Hessel added two RBI for McMinnville.

Senior Gage Gubrud drove in three runs in his first game of the 2014 season, which he played in as the designated hitter.

On the mound, junior David Brosius earned the win after allowing three hits and two walks in five innings pitched, striking out 10. Freshman Wyatt Smith struck out four in two innings pitched to close the game.

The Grizzlies hosted Century on Monday. McMinnville will host Forest Grove at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McMinnville baseball field at Patton Middle School.

INDEPENDENCE – A play at the plate in the top of the seventh inning led to the final out of the game as the Class 3A Pirates fell to the Class 4A Lions in Saturday’s nonleague contest.

After allowing five runs in the fourth inning, Dayton scored two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the seventh inning to stay with Central before falling short.

Dayton (4-5, 3-1 Class 3A West Valley League) plays at Colton today at 5 p.m. The Pirates take on Horizon Christian of Tualatin at 5 p.m. Friday in Dayton.

WARRENTON – The Warriors fell to Warrenton in Class 3A nonleague play Saturday.

Amity (4-8, 2-2 Class 3A West Valley League) hosts Class 2A Toledo Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in a nonleague contest.

AMITY – Lance Nelson’s two-run double helped pace the Warriors to a victory over the Vikings in Class 3A West Valley League play Friday.

DAYTON – The Dayton baseball team lost to Gervais in Class 3A West Valley League play, the Pirates’ first WVL defeat of the season.

Jarred Ashley had two doubles for the Pirates, who allowed 10 runs in the sixth inning to the Cougars. Dayton had 11 hits in the game but committed five errors.

TUALATIN – The Spartans allowed nine runs in the fourth inning in a five-inning defeat against the Hawks in Class 3A West Valley League play Friday.

Matt Bushbaum singled for the only hit of the game for the Spartans.

Sheridan (4-7, 0-3 WVL) hosts Willamina at 5 p.m. today. The Spartans then host Gervais at 5 p.m. Friday.

Yamhill-Carlton 0

ASTORIA – Two days after defeating the Fishermen, the Tigers fell to Astoria to even their Class 4A Cowapa League record to 1-1 (2-7 overall).

Yamhill-Carlton had a scheduled game against Junction City on Saturday canceled.

The Tigers play at Scappoose tonight at 5 p.m. and host Scappoose Wednesday night at 5 p.m.

ALOHA – Kaleigh Scanlon went 2-for-2 with a triple and Jacinda Swiger went 2-for-4, but the Grizzlies fell to the Warriors in Class 6A nonleague play.

Makayla Khatewoda scored the lone run of the game for the Grizzlies (6-5) in the sixth inning, on an RBI single by Marina Jorgenson. Sydney Reeser absorbed the loss as the starting pitcher.

McMinnville hosted Tigard on Monday. The Grizzlies play at Newberg Wednesday at 5 p.m.

DAYTON – The Pirates blew out the Cougars in Class 3A West Valley League play.

Dayton (9-1, 4-0 WVL) plays at Colton Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Pirates host Corbett in a Class 3A nonleague contest Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

RAINIER – The Bulldogs fell to the Columbians in Class 3A nonleague play Friday.

Willamina (6-7, 2-1 Class 3A West Valley League) plays at Sheridan tonight at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs host Amity Friday night at 5 p.m.

YAMHILL – The Class 4A Tigers improved to 6-0 on the season with a nonleague victory over the Class 3A Pirates Thursday.

Yamhill-Carlton’s scheduled games against Junction City and Newport on Saturday were canceled.

The Tigers play at Banks today at 5 p.m. before hosting Astoria for a doubleheader Friday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
