Council supports bond measure

CARLTON — Carlton city councilors approved Tuesday a resolution supporting the Yamhill-Carlton School District bond issue appearing on the May 17 ballot.

The council held a special session Tuesday to express its formal backing for the measure, which will go to voters in Carlton, Yamhill and surrounding rural areas lying within school district boundaries.

The district is seeking $14.2 million to repair roofs, electrical systems, plumbing systems and other worn out elements throughout the district, and build a new high school gym doubling as an emergency shelter for the region in the event of a natural disaster.

If voters approve the measure, the district will be eligible for another $4 million in state funding. The local and state money combined will cover the entire cost of the package, according to Superintendent Charan Cline.
