Breaking news version: Cascade Steel to lay off 70

Cascade Steel Rolling Mills will reduce its crew by about 70 workers in a couple weeks, citing West Coast market conditions that have produced stiff competition from international steel importers.

With its crew of 440 workers, Cascade Steel is one of McMinnville's top employers. A subsidiary of Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc., the company is a leading west coast steel manufacturer. According to a statement released Friday, the "permanent" cutbacks amount to about 15 percent of the company's employees, and include both union and non-union jobs.

The shift reduction will occur around mid-February. It's the first significant cutback since the 2008 recession.

€œ"Today'€™s decision was not made lightly and comes after careful deliberation," said Cascade Steel President Jeff Dyck. "€œWe value the strong contributions of our employees. However, we are constantly evaluating our production levels and our cost structure to maintain our advantages in an increasingly challenging market."

The News-Register will have complete coverage in Tuesday's print edition.

Tragic for our citizens and environment. Instead of well-paying local jobs, we outsource steel production to steel workers overseas and then use lots of carbon producing shipping methods to get it here. Now these laid-off workers will need unemployment until they can find a minimum wage job? GMI, unions, job-protection, and universal health care is starting to sound better and better...works for our politicians, why not for their constituents?

There are lots of 'perks' that are only offered to the politicians (congress) -- free, 24/7/365 health care, franking privileges, excessive expense accounts, weakened insider trading rules, higher death benefits (while in office) than soldiers killed in action, free flights ... etc!

But hey, at least the public is involved ... we get to foot the bill! Who will fund ours?
