HILLSBORO - Pirates head coach Chris Gubrud described the Dufur Rangers' last offensive play as a fluke - it proved to be a game-winning fluke as the Rangers took the lead with 19 seconds left and held on to eliminate Perrydale in the OSAA Class 1A Football Semifinal Round at Hillsboro Stadium Saturday.

The Rangers and Pirates went punch-for-punch through 38 minutes - the teams were separated in terms of total offense by just just 30 yards, with Perrydale's mark of 337 yards coming out on top. The Pirates executed their power-running game plan to a T, but Gubrud was the first to admit that Dufur had exposed his Pirates' biggest weakness - their defensive secondary. Dufur gained over 200 yards in the air, with the last catch being the longest and most important.

With 2:39 remaining, the Rangers had scored on a pass from Bailey Keever to Curtis Crawford, but incurred a holding penalty on the two-point conversion attempt. Perrydale stopped Dufur on their second chance at the try; though Crawford caught a 13-yard pass, the penalty had pushed Dufur back to the 14, leaving Perrydale in need of a couple of first downs to kill off the clock and advance.

They managed only one, turning over the ball at midfield on downs with 41 seconds left. Perrydale's Haylen Janesofsky broke up Dufur's first shot at the endzone, but Hagen Pence of Dufur got on the business end of a 64-yard bomb from Keever to set the margin. Dufur could not convert the try, but Perrydale could not score with less then 30 seconds left.

Perrydale ends the year at 10-1.
