Highway 99 to be named for fallen hero

SALEM — A sign will soon be put up designating Highway 99W south of Rickreall as a Fallen Hero Memorial Highway.

The Statesman Journal reports the sign being installed in the Clow Corner Road area will honor Army Cpl. Kory D. Wiens.

Twenty-year-old Wiens died eight years ago from an improvised explosive device while he and his specialized search dog, Cooper, were on patrol in Muhammad Sath, Iraq. Cooper was also killed in the blast and the sign will honor him as well.

Wiens was a 2005 graduate of West Albany High School. He was part of the 94th Mine Dog Detachment, 5th Engineer Battalion, 1st Engineer Brigade based at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

On Saturday, Wiens’ family and friends gathered to dedicate the sign and remember the fallen soldier.
