Carlton pool closed over weekend following cardiac death

Updated with additional information on Tuesday, June 23.

CARLTON — A local man suffered a heart attack at the Carlton pool Thursday.

Lifeguards, medics and police officers did everything they could, said City Manager Chad Olsen, but the 53-year-old man succumbed after being transferred to the Willamette Valley Medical Center. He expressed condolences to the family.

The pool closed over the weekend to allow time for an investigation and the staff to recover emotionally. It reopened Monday.

Olsen said Jeffrey L. Collins entered the water following the end of family swim time Thursday night. He said the pool had been cleared in preparation for adult lap swim, so few people were on the deck at the time.

Lifeguards saw the man struggling and pulled him from the water. They called 911 and administered CPR until medics arrived.

Collins was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where he died.

Carlton’s popular outdoor pool just opened for the season June 16. Pool staff had just gone through a set of training exercises in preparation.
