DVD: 9 to 5

When Violet is passed over for promotion once again, the three women bond and dream of running the office themselves. They get their chance, when, after a series of misadventures, they kidnap the boss and place him under house arrest. While he is away from the office, they make improvements, increasing productivity and drawing attention from headquarters.

“Nine to Five” is a hilarious comedy with a social message. Parton is a hoot as Doralee, and Tomlin and Fonda have great timing and presence. It may be dated, but the film humorously highlights how a selfish sleazeball can make the office environment unbearable for everyone and how the old boys club passes over women with plenty of talent and ideas.

“Nine to Five” (1980) Directed by Colin Higgins, starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman. Rated PG, 110 minutes.
