A 1985 Honda Accord slammed into the loading platform of a parked delivery truck about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at Northeast Fourth and Evans streets.

The operator of the car, John Thomas Smith, 41, of McMinnville, was transported by McMinnville Fire Department ambulance to Willamette Valley Medical Center and transferred by Life Flight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday.

Capt. Tim Symons of the McMinnville police gave this account:

Smith was driving eastbound on Fourth and failed to stop at the stop sign at the Evans Street intersection. The vehicle impacted the loading platform of a Maletis Beverage delivery truck that was legally parked on the south side of Fourth, east of Evans, being prepared for unloading.

Maletis Beverage, a beer distributor, is located in Portland.
