Bicyclist hit by pickup

A 12-year-old Duniway Middle School student was hit by a pickup while riding his bicycle about 3 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Southwest Second Street and Fleishauer Lane. The incident occurred in the school zone near the middle school and Newby Elementary School.

McMinnville police officer Steve Macartney gave this account:

The bicyclist, Jose Alonso Olmedo, was hit by a 2007 Chevrolet driven by James Tippens, 62, of McMinnville. The collision occurred as Tippens was exiting a parking lot onto Second Street.

Olmedo, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported by McMinnville Fire Department ambulance to Willamette Valley Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

No citations have been issued, but bicyclists under 16 years old are required to wear a helmet.
