"Rojas, 27, called it bizarre to be treated like a criminal. His only crime was trying to flee Honduras and the corruption, poverty and crime that have made his homeland one of the least developed and most unstable countries in Central America."

Last I checked, entering another sovereign nation, like the US, is [a] crime. Commit a crime, you get arrested and detained until things are sorted out through the process.

What goes on in Honduras, that is not America's problem. Honduras is a sovereign nation itself.

"The refugees came from 16 different countries and spoke 12 languages. In addition to El Salvador and Honduras, they came from Armenia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Eritrea, Guatamala, India, Mauritania, Mexico, Nepal, Nicaragua, Peru and Russia."

The USA is not the savior of the entire world's population who wants to flee their failed country. The US simply has scarce resources and we cannot feed, cloth, pay, and foster the entire world. Period.

"We are a nation of immigrants."

I'm so tired of hearing this ignorant statement. Americans stopped being "immigrants" from the very first generation onward of those born to the immigrants that came here over 400 years ago. This nation is a nation of AMERICANS!

Immigrants, legal but mostly illegal, are doing what Obama wanted to do himself, "fundamentally change America." Do the research. The more people that come here add to the burden of "the system." That means more need for groceries, supplies, gasoline, etc. Things an area just do not have enough of for all, some many get displaced because of the influx of illegal aliens. Services get overtaxed. Taxes go up to pay for the problems. Diversity is weakness, not strength.

It is not, in fact, a crime to report to a U.S. border station and petition for asylum. You may well be kept in custody while your petition is adjudicated, but you have not committed a criminal act by showing up and knocking on the U.S. door.
The most common causes of illegal presence in the country are, No. 1, overstaying a legitimate visa, and, No. 2, a distant No. 2, crossing the border surrepitiously. There could be others, such as forging a passport, but they are very rare.

IMMIGRANTS ILLEGALLY IN the U.S. collectively contribute nearly $12 billion each year to state and local tax coffers, according to a new report that challenges recent election cycle rhetoric.

The study from the Institute on Taxation & Economic Policy found that immigrants in the U.S. without legal permission kick in their billions in the form of income, property, sales or excise taxes.

There were roughly 11 million immigrants estimated to be in the U.S. illegally as of 2013, according to the report. And each and every state collects at least a few million dollars from tax payments made by such immigrants each year, ranging from Montana's $2.2 million to California's $3.2 billion.

"Regardless of the politically contentious nature of immigration reform, the data show undocumented immigrants greatly contribute to our nation's economy, not just in labor but also with tax dollars," Meg Wiehe, the institute's state tax policy director, said in a statement last week.

Mudstump; What a ridiculous argument! With your logic, no act would be considered illegal as long as the perpetrator paid their taxes.

T.W.S stated that "...people that come here add to the burden of "the system." I'm simply posting the research that says they contribute more than they take.

Bill B - Quit stuffing words in my mouth.

Talk about an ignorant statement! ’Diversity is weakness not strength’, that’s pretty twisted logic. By the way, basic logic class will tell you if an argument is started by a false statement, the rest of the argument is invalid. It is not illegal to come to the United States and request asylum.

yamhillbilly2 - "It is not illegal to come to the United States and request asylum."

I'm sure this fact is coming as a surprise to those that have consumed a steady diet of FOX and hate radio. Who would have thought that immigration reform was so complicated?

T.W.S.

Mudstump - cherry picking leftist websites or other leftist think tank sources is NOT proof of an argument. You are clearly not taking the entirety of the picture into view.

Drain on education system
Drain on ERs (many have gone bankrupt and closed over the years in CA, hardest hit by illegals)
Drain on correctional institutes
Drain on law enforcement resources
Drain on scarce resources
Drain on public services
Drain on law abiding citizens with their criminality, to include all the lives LOST but for their ILLEGAL presences here

Need I go on?

All of the above costs BILLIONS to the taxpayers.

And don't give me the "illegals pay taxes too" mantra. Why? Because they also get it back ILLEGALLY through their anchor babies. If you have to ask how, maybe you should do some Google research.

T.W.S.

sbagwell - lying is a crime. It's perjury. Also, requesting asylum is a privilege, NOT a right.

I can go on and on and on and on...the weakness of too much diversity is EXACTLY what destroyed ROME!

My argument is solid. Your retort is weakness.

yamhillbilly2

Hey Troy! Thanks for the “edifacation’ of where it is you get your warped view of the world. You better be careful about getting any diversity to your “news” sources. I had to look at a couple of sites you use for ‘information’ that you suggested for me and WOW!! they are twisted. Maybe you should get your head out of your “fox hole” and try a little reality. You are an amazing example of arrogance an ignorance along with being a great screamer. You’re right, you ‘can go on and on’ and I’m sure you will. It’s kind of fun watching an a** make a fool of himself. And by the way if You choose to cherry pick a few right wing sites and think tanks it does Not support your argument. I guess you forgot the send me to the Daily Stormer for another good dose of hate.

The programming runs deep and strong. Distrust of any other source of information is the intent. It's been going on since the 80s. My dad was a proud union democrat who began consuming a steady diet of FOX and Limbaugh when he retired. He was once a loving and caring person, but he died a bitter, racist and hateful man consumed with fear. Near the end of his life, he asked me where I got my "nutty liberal" ideas and I told him.... from you dad.

Joel

Mudstump, If you were completely honest, you probably would have told your dad that you got your views from a steady diet of MSNBC and Huff Post.

Joel - "Mudstump, If you were completely honest, you probably would have told your dad that you got your views from a steady diet of MSNBC and Huff Post."

You are completely wrong about that....he is the man who raised me and my kind heart and generous nature come from watching him live it. When I was eight I was with my dad when he gave his winter coat to a poor black man that was out in 20 degree weather. I was with him when he gave people rides when they had no car and I listened as he told me there was good and bad in all people regardless of race, gender or economic status. This was the man who instilled these "liberal" values in me. It was heartbreaking to see him change, but he did and our relationship was never the same. He seemed to enjoy calling me a tree hugging liberal...a Jane Fonda wannabe....and his and Rush's fav...a feminazi. It was Rush and FOX that brainwashed my father and changed who he was...I'm still the same person he raised so many years ago.
