Please stop shooting exploding targets 1 mile from a town of 30,000 people.

DJ

jean, you do realize exploding targets can't hurt you from a mile away, right? please stop voting

Lizzy

Aren't there people living within the mile? What is this doing to the shooters themselves? It's like having to live with terrorists next door. What are they practicing for? Tired of people trying to terrorize others.

David Bates

Perhaps, given the prevalence of conspiracy theories about explosions in tunnels (which, apparently, are literally everywhere, cris-crossing the city, serving nefarious purposes) a helpful follow-up to this story might be to talk to a scientist or acoustics expert who can explain in plain language why it IS possible for relatively small explosions far away to be so loud, shake buildings, etc.

Jean

Did they get a fireworks permit? It seems these qualify as fireworks. Also, the neighbors surrounding Trestle View Lane may want to take a peek at their homes' foundations for any new cracks. They can sue for any damages.

This reminds me of attending a nuclear simulation at the White Sands Missile Range. The set off 750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate and fuel oil to simulate the destination of a one kiloton nuclear device. (Actual explosive equivalent was about 3 kilotons because none of the energy went into thermal pulse or nuclear radiation.). They had bleachers set up a couple of miles from ground zero with tap trucks from the local beer distributor. Good time was had by all. I spent the next few days helping my professor to find and recover his armored camera that was supposed to be taking a photo from directly under the explosion.

eryone in MacMinniville should be grateful that I'm not setting off any of my thermonuclear hand grenades.

These folks with the Tannerite might be annoying to many. However; unlike Yamhill County's marijuana Mafia, they aren't actually shooting at children.

BigfootLives

I’ve shot tannerite a bunch of times, if that is what the booms were coming from they had to be firing off 30 lb containers, because I am off of fellows and my closed garage door rattled with the first one, as well as all the windows in my house and neighbors house. I would think it would have to be much higher in the air to have the blast wave reach those kind of distances. Dry runs with a drone? Maybe county sheriff should get a search warrant and see what’s going on with that guy place.

Jean

At least now we know who....and what....is causing the explosions.

JWC

I agree with Bigfootkives. My children have a tradition of celebrating the Fourth of July by detonating a few dozen pounds of Tannerite a couple hundred yards away from our house. The boom is loud, but not loud enough to require hearing protection. More importantly, there is no noticable ground shocks. I've also worked with setting ANFO explosives for mining. Used a concrete mixer truck to place tons of the good stuff. There was never serious ground shocks. Someone is detonating far more than merely recreational quantities of Tannerite (which barely qualifies as an explosive) and they are detonated buried explosives to generate the ground shocks.

JWC

Meant ground shocks at a distance

BeTheMatch

Well, since the police here don't enforce any laws, how is this surprising to anyone?

TTT

BeTheMatch this is County jurisdiction so your comment is best directed toward the Sherriff's Office not "the police".

Also if there was no crime committed then there is no way for a warrant to be obtained. If our District Attorney can articulate a crime then we have a different situation.

It seems behavior generating over 100 calls to 911 could be Disorderly Conduct ORS 166.025 as pasted below:

A person commits the crime of disorderly conduct in the second degree if, with intent to cause public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, or recklessly creating a risk thereof, the person:

(b)Makes unreasonable noise;

(c)Disturbs any lawful assembly of persons without lawful authority;

(f)Creates a hazardous or physically offensive condition by any act which the person is not licensed or privileged to do.

(2)(a) Disorderly conduct in the second degree is a Class B misdemeanor.

Joel R

Isn't it a crime to 'disturb the peace'?

Joel R

Just googled this up. Deputy Rex, doesn't this apply?

What constitutes disturbing the peace in Oregon?
It is unlawful to make any excessive, unreasonable, or unusually loud sound which disturbs the peace and quiet of any neighborhood or which injures or endangers the comfort, repose, health, peace, or safety of any person.

Jean

Yep, sure is.

TTT

Joel R what you've cited is a Portland City Code.

https://www.portland.gov/code/14/a30/010#:~:text=It%20is%20unlawful%20to%20make,or%20safety%20of%20any%20person.

You need something covering Yamhill County which the ORS I provided above covers.

https://oregon.public.law/statutes/ors_166.025

Joel R

Yeah, looks like your right, TTT.
But the challenge with the ORS might be that it says "with intent to cause..."
They could probably just say "we didn't iINTEND to cause any disturbance, we're just enjoying our shooting range activities."
Maybe Yamhill County needs to hurry and draft an ordinance similar to the one in Portland.

TTT

Joel R I believe you are correct and they could argue there was no intent. I'd love to see an ordinance created in Yamhill County to discourage behavior which obviously frightened so many people.

JWC

I remain convinced that these booms were not someone shooting Tannerite. Even in large quantities, it should not produce noticable ground shocks. The description by a credible witness is consistent with the detonation of a buried explosive.
