This is why financial checks and balances and annual audits are critical to business .....appears the nursery was pretty lax in their approach to accounting.....doesn’t excuse embezzlement, but relying on blind trust is a pretty poor management decision.

Agreed tagup.
Her strategy was apparently simple in nature and would have been caught in an audit. They had a huge swing in profitability. If they were lucky, and IRS audit would have been triggered years ago and a lot of pain could have been avoided.
You can't trust anyone completely with anything in business. Trust, but verify is the only way to go.
