He was on probation when he shot and killed someone and got only 10 years? It wasn't a plea offer because it said he went to trial, how do you only get 10 years for killing someone?

I agree, rosebloomer. Ten years sounds very light.
My guess is that their must have been a lot more to the case than was covered in this article.

Perhaps this will clarify the defendant's sentence to some degree.

The jury found him guilty of charges that included first-degree manslaughter.

He had been indicted by a grand jury on charges that included murder.

However, District Attorney Brad Berry explained, “The court - Judge Ladd Wiles - instructed the jury that they could consider the ‘lesser included’ charges of manslaughter in the first-degree, manslaughter in the second-degree and/or criminally negligent homicide (in place of the murder charge). This allows the jury to consider a lesser offense should they feel there is insufficient evidence to convict on the main (highest) charge.”

Had the murder charge stuck, he could have received a 25-year sentence.
