It's pancake flipping time in Amity

AMITY — While membership in the Amity Valley Women’s Club has declined significantly over the years, the club’s signature summer event has remained as popular as ever, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers.

The club’s 58th annual Pancake Breakfast and Car Show is slated to run 6 a.m. to 11:30 Sunday, July 26, at City Park. The park lies across from the cemetery on the Bellevue-Hopewell Highway.

“Our numbers are down, and it would be pretty difficult to put this on with so few of us,” said President Kathi Hubbard. “We’ve been lucky to have community members who always help.”

Preparing eggs, ham and pancakes is one one of the most popular jobs. But there is plenty of other work that also needs doing.

“There’s a lot of behind the scenes work, organizing,” Hubbard said. “There are jobs we used to spread out. Now, many of us are taking on a lot of jobs.”

Club member Edna Troyer said she’s expecting about 200 entries for the car show. Hubbard said Amity Fire District volunteers will help park and position vehicles.

Hubbard said about 1,600 customers are expected for breakfast. Amity High School’s FFA chapter and the dance team will do their part by serving coffee and juice, then busing tables, she said.

Hubbard said the club has ordered 300 pounds of ham, 100 cartons of eggs and about two-dozen 10-pound bags of pancake mix, along with enough coffee and juice to satisfy a small army.

The cost runs $4 for children 12 and under, $7 for everyone else.

Hubbard said the club sets aside $3,000 to $4,000 of its profit to fund next year’s edition. The rest is allocated to worthy local causes.

“We put any remaining money back into the community,” she said. “We give a scholarship to a graduating senior, we donate to Red Ribbon Week at the high school, and we give money to FFA and the Dance Team, to the city library and movies in the park.”

Hubbard said her greatest joy is watching people have such a good time. People who once lived in Amity, but have moved away, return just to eat, get together with old friends and have a good time.
