Gas leak leads to evacuations in Lafayette

South Jefferson Street homes were evacuated for a several hours on Monday, June 22, in Lafayette after reports of a gas leak.

City Administrator Branden Dross told the News-Register that a contractor struck the gas line at 173 S. Jefferson St.

Lafayette Public Works, Northwest Natural and the Lafayette Fire Department responded to the area.

Fire Chief Tim Jech executed a voluntary evacuation of the immediate area. The area was deemed safe about two hours later.
