Why not allow one of the fastest growing and largest employers in the town have a sign where they could potentially advertise jobs? Full disclosure, I work for EMPWR. The growth of this company is phenomenal, and this company is a huge asset to this community. It's just a sign.

If the city caves on standards for one company, it will set a precedent for other businesses wanting a variance.

It's a really bad idea to make exceptions to legal requirements simply because a company hires a lot of people or makes a lot of money. If they are going to allow this signage for EMPWR they would have to allow it for all businesses within McMinnville.

From what I am reading, the company is agreeing to use the sign functionally as one that is allowed under code. It is just a newer sign that has the ability to do more. So, it's like the monitors at Taco Bell that show menus all of the time but technically could show television.

edrinker, do they have a proposed workaround for the sign being 12.5 times larger than the 24 square foot limit? Using it as a static sign, or whatever you want to call it, seems like a fine compromise but the breaking the size limit by that much is a lot harder to justify.
