As of 2025-2026, there are over 2,400 completed rail-trails in the United States, covering more than 25,000 miles, with at least one in every state.

Empirical studies show that crime rates on these trails are very low.

There are many workarounds for farmers.

Shout out to Gaston farmer Steve Wick in this article who presented an opposing position, saying impacts to farmers could be minimized by shutting down the trail during chemical sprayings.

“I would have no problem farming along the Yamhelas trail right of way,” Wicks said.

Right now, Oregon park and rec is offering 1.6 million grants for trail projects. Yamhelas would qualify.

If you can't envision this project all you have to do is take a look at all the beautiful trails across the country to see it's very doable.

Lack of imagination can break us. The ability to imagine can make us.

Oregon is famous for their ability to imagine legislation that costs tax payers tons of money and doesn’t help anybody. Measure 110 had plenty of studies of how well that would work too. The land was purchased when? 2017? About nine years. Hmmm. That’s the same time as my Tesla Roadster. It’ll be available for sale soon. Trust me.

Would I be allowed to ride a 2-stroke dirtbike on this trail? If so, I’d change my position and support it 100%

It is frustrating when Mary Starrett and other senior citizens bemoan timeline and cost. It was Mary and fellow commissioner Lindsay Berschauer who in 2020 - Only 3 years after it was purchased! - killed the trail even though construction of a bridge had already begun. They also returned hefty private donations and a $1.5 million grant to the state! They also spent taxpayer money to tear down the the start of the bridge! NOW state park and rec is offering 1.6 million grants for trail projects. Yamhelas would qualify. If you can't envision this project all you have to do is take a look at all the beautiful trails across the country to see it's very doable. Lack of imagination can break us. The ability to imagine can make us.

Senior citizens assemble! Are the tax payers going to be cool with the dirt bikes? Or is that going to be a problem? Maybe Electric dirt bikes? Will there be a speed limit to the trail? I’ll scamper I out to my garage and fire up the old KX500 and check this trail out in the most South African way possible. Instead of bridges, maybe we can get ramps?

On October 2, "sneaky" county commissioners Kit Johnston and Mary Starret voted to remove the "rail to trail" project from the county's Transportation System Plan (TSP).

YC citizens called the vote "sneaky" because the trail item was added after the agenda was printed and no information about the trail was included in the meeting packet.

The trail is a public asset already paid for by taxpayers. Public land decisions shouldn't happen quietly.
