News-Register wins national awards

The McMinnville paper was honored for its editorial section, its website and some of its news and feature stories.

Its editorial section, Viewpoints, placed first among dailies and non-dailies with circulation of 6,000 or more. Editor Ossie Bladine, Managing Editor Steve Bagwell and editorial assistant Marna Porath, now retired, produced the editions that were submitted.

Judges credited Viewpoints with providing “a really good array of views.” They said they rated it tops in what proved a very competitive category.

Reporter Starla Pointer’s weekly Stopping By series took top honors in the best feature series category for dailies and non-dailies of 6,000 or more. Judges noted the variety of subject matter, and concluded the series is “clearly providing value to the local community.”

Pointer also placed first in obituary writing in the same classification for her story detailing the life of Del Smith. “well-written and researched,” judges said, covering “both his accomplishments and failures.”

She picked up an honorable mention, as well, for an education story about the McMinnville School District’s implementation of common core curriculum.

The News-Register won a third-place award in the 6,000 and up division for its website. “Clean layout and lots of local news!” judges said.

Finally, reporter Paul Daquilante and Sports Editor Robert Husseman shared third place for best breaking news story among non-dailies of 6,000 to 11,999. Judges called their work on the slaying of Linfield College football player Parker Moore “a well-covered story of a tragedy.”
