Volunteers sought for amphitheater build

At 9 the morning of Saturday’s festival, the district plans to host a community build stage-raising project. Members of the community are invited to help line up beams and lay them in place as the project moves forward during the day.

Kelly McDonald, managing partner of the Granary District and co-owner and general manager of its anchoring Grain Station Brew Works, expects the community build to take about three to four hours. A dedication will follow, before the new structure gets its inaugural use.

Construction is already underway on the amphitheater’s foundation. It will ready to go by Saturday morning.

In the past, event organizers have had to rent stages and tents. McDonald said the new permanent structure will reduce expenses for the events’ nonprofit sponsors.

“The downtown area is seen as McMinnville’s living room, so this is McMinnville’s backyard,” McDonald said. “The Granary District is doing so much here to improve the area, and this will lend to the quality of architecture and construction.”

He said community partnership is a big piece of the project. “It’s part of giving back to the community and creating a place for public events,” he said.

The Yamhill County Economic Development Department awarded the district a $3,300 grant for the project, and the list of donors has been growing daily.

The Brew Works will provide beer, soft drinks, water and pizza for the build crew. A kid’s play area will be set up for youngsters.
