Newberg Dairy Queen heavily damaged by fire

NEWBERG - An early Friday morning fire heavily damaged the Dairy Queen restaurant, 401 W. First St.

The fire was reported about 2 a.m., according to Newberg Fire Chief Les Hallman. When the first crew arrived, there was thick smoke coming from the structure located on the south end of town.

Because of deteriorating conditions, firefighters initially attacked the blaze from the exterior. However, the fire was concentrated to the roof.

McMinnville Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene, along with firefighters from Dundee and St. Paul. About thirty-five firefighters and eight pieces of equipment were called out, and it took them about an hour to contain the fire.

A cause has not been determined.

The Dairy Queen will be closed indefinitely, according to its Facebook page.

People have been posting comments on the page in the wake of the fire. These are some of the posts:

"The Dairy Queen has been a special place for many, many years as we would travel between McMinnville and places beyond."

"So sorry! You have a whole community supporting you and your rebuilding."

"We will miss you. Hurry back."

"Prayers for you and your employees during this hard time."

"Lifetime of memories there. Anxious for her to reopen."
