News-Register digital: Keeping you connected since 1996
What started with a website is now a mobile app for your iPad
Feb 15, 2013
(Dan Shryock/Digital Media Director) It's been an interesting road, one that started with an overused phrase - "the information super highway." Remember that?
It was 1996 and this Internet thing was just starting to catch on. There was no wireless connection, of course. No one used the word "bandwidth." You could get dial-up access with its screeching sound over the phone but that meant a subscription to a service such as AOL. But, in McMinnville you needed to make a long distance call to Salem or Portland. There was no connection phone number for McMinnville or Yamhill County.
On Aug. 27, 1996, the News-Register in cooperation with OnlineMac (the predecessor to OnlineNW) launched the first newspaper website in Oregon. We were posting news online. We were the first news organization in the state to post live election results that November when Bill Clinton was re-elected as president. But we wondered where all this would lead us. How could we maintain the portability of a newspaper while delivering information in a digital form.
We all know the answer now, of course. Tablets and smart phones give us instant access to information no matter where we are. And, beginning today, the News-Register has an app for that. OK, it's only for the iPad … but let's take small steps here.
We've also launched the iPad app for our monthly publication, the Oregon Wine Press.
The new app is called News-Register Weekly, an experimental republishing of content from the newspaper and website in a once-weekly download format. The iPhone and Android smart phone apps will be here in a few weeks. Likewise, the droid tablet app is not far away. While the apps are being developed, so is the content. We're looking at what kinds of content we should be including in The Weekly and we're making adjustments as we go along.
We can’t do this alone. We need your feedback and ideas. We encourage you to click here to find the app in the App Store, download it and take a look. Then send me a message (email@example.com) with your thoughts.
The News-Register is still portable, still keeping you connected, and we're pretty excited about it.
