DAYTON — The body of 20-year-old Anthony Jimenez of McMinnville was recovered about 9:40 this morning in the area of San Salvador Island, about one mile downriver from where he drowned Sunday afternoon in the Willamette River southwest of Dayton.

A Yamhill County Sheriff's Marine Patrol boat discovered the body that had surfaced, according to Sheriff Jack Crabtree.

"That was good it was our boat that made the discovery," he said. "It's a tough deal when a fisherman or someone else does that.

"This was a tragic incident, but the recovery does bring some closure for the family," Crabtree said. "It's been a long stretch of time for the family."

Jimenez was swimming with friends near a popular area known as "Donkey Ponds," accessed from Southeast Dorey Road.

He entered the river on the Yamhill County side with two people. The trio intended to swim across to the Marion County side, but only one made it. Jimenez and a friend began struggling and calling for help. Jimenez disappeared while the friend was rescued by two individuals.
