Western Mennonite boys and girls both make state

The No. 2-ranked Pioneers (22-4, 11-3) finished in second place in the regular season behind the Rams (22-3, 13-1), but they battled Saturday to earn a home playoff game in the first round, which starts Saturday.

Western Mennonite led by two points after the third quarter, but Regis tied the game at 35 at the end of regulation. The Pioneers ran away with the game in overtime, outscoring the Rams 11-6. Jenna Christenson scored 13 points, and Elyssa Fahndrich scored 10 points for Western Mennonite.

The Pioneers play Saturday at home vs. Portland Christian in the first round of the 2A state playoffs. The winner advances to the state quarterfinals at the Pendleton Convention Center in Eastern Oregon.

The Western Mennonite boys basketball team also qualified for the state playoffs again. The Pioneers lost 42-38 to Regis in the Tri-River conference championship game Saturday, and now they play at home Friday vs. Riverdale.

The No. 5-ranked Pioneers (18-9) finished second in the conference behind Regis.

Perrydale playoff bound

The Perrydale boys and girls basketball teams made the 1A state playoffs this season.

The Perrydale boys basketball team lost 56-44 to Country Christian in the Casco League championship game Saturday at McMinnville High School. The Pirates (21-7) finished second in the regular season behind Country Christian as well, but the No. 16-ranked Pirates earned a home playoff game tonight vs. McKenzie in the first round.

The winner plays Friday in the second round.

The Perrydale girls basketball team also qualified for the state playoffs after it finished tied for first in the Casco. The Pirates went 21-5 this season and lost the league championship late in the regular season with a lost to rival St. Paul. Perrydale lost 30-14 to St. Paul in the Casco Tournament championship game.

The Pirates play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at home vs. Lowell in the first round of the 1A playoffs. The second round is Saturday.
