Toney, 'Dogs back on top
DAYTON – The Willamina girls basketball team clinched its fourth consecutive Class 3A West Valley League championship on Feb. 5 – with three games left in regular-season play.
Kyra Toney scored 12 points and Kasey Anderson added nine points in the Bulldogs’ 39-21 victory over Dayton on Feb. 5. Willamina’s victory, coupled with Amity’s loss to Colton in Amity, allowed the Bulldogs (19-2, 11-0 WVL) to secure the league title early and extend their winning streak to 19 games.
Willamina led 18-13 at halftime before outscoring Dayton (10-10, 6-5) 12-2 in the third quarter, building a lead that the Pirates could not surmount.
“In the second quarter, we pulled away a little bit,” Willamina coach Tom Anderson said. “In the third quarter, we stepped up. I felt the difference was defensive pressure, creating turnovers.”
Teddi Hop led Dayton with 10 points, and Maddie Shirley added seven points.
Whitney Anderson and Janae Calaway scored eight points each for the Bulldogs. Calaway, a 5-foot-8 sophomore wing, received a rare start for Willamina and impressed Tom Anderson with her play.
“All year long, we’ve been looking for that seventh girl,” Tom Anderson said. “Janae has separated herself as a clear-cut seventh kid. She’s just doing a good job of knowing her role.”
