Timberwolves knock off Grizzlies

The McMinnville girls tennis team lost its first match of the season Thursday, but it took until the very last match of the evening for the outcome to be decided.

Ultimately, the Grizzlies (11-1, 10-1 Class 6A Pacific Conferece) and Tualatin deadlocked at 4-4, with the Timberwolves winning nine sets to Mac’s eight at the Cowls Street tennis courts.

The decisive match of the day was also the most dramatic. In a three-hour contest in the warm sun, the Grizzlies’ No. 1 doubles pairing of Molly Olsen and Sam Purdy won their three-set match, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-3.

It was the only doubles match the Grizzlies would win. Caitlan Baker triumphed at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3; Sophomore Shay Bristow earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles; and Rachel Legard won the No. 4 singles match, 6-4, 6-4.

McMinnville played at Glencoe Monday. The Grizzlies conclude the regular season with a match Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Century.
