Tigers on the comeback trail
YAMHILL – After allowing a grand slam as part of a six-run third inning, the Yamhill-Carlton baseball team trailed 9-3 to Class 4A Cowapa League rival Banks, hoping to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat.
Instead, the Tigers found their stroke at the plate and battled back.
Conner Weidner hit a three-run home run in the third inning and Zach Rhodes added a solo shot as part of a seven-run fourth inning as Yamhill-Carlton notched its first Cowapa League victory of the season at the Braves’ expense, 14-11, on Tuesday night.
“My guys showed a little bit of maturity,” Tigers coach Brett Brunner said. “It was a good sign. They battled back.”
Weidner, Rhodes and Braden Martin each had two hits; the trio combined on 12 RBI. Michael Mitchell scattered two hits over three innings pitched to earn the victory in relief.
Y-C (2-9, 1-3 Cowapa) played at Banks on Thursday night. The Tigers host Tillamook Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Sheridan 15, Colton 8
COLTON – The Spartans scored 12 runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on to defeat the Vikings in Class 3A West Valley League play.
Andrew Glynn went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for Sheridan (5-9, 1-5 WVL), which snapped an eight-game losing streak. Hayden Purrone went 2-for-4 with a double, and Boone Meyer went 1-for-2 with a two-run single in the seventh inning.
Jacob Hertel, Chad Jordan and Jackson Meyer also had hits for the Spartans.
Sheridan hosts Dayton today at 5 p.m.
Glencoe 11, McMinnville 0 (5)
HILLSBORO – Glencoe scored all 11 of its runs in the first inning off three McMinnville pitchers as the Crimson Tide defeated the Grizzlies in Class 6A Pacific Conference play.
Jacinda Swiger went 2-for-2 from the plate for the Grizzlies (7-8, 1-3 Pacific), who outhit the Crimson Tide (12-4, 4-0 Pacific) 6-5 during the game.
McMinnville had a game against Forest Grove, scheduled for Wednesday, postponed due to rain. The Grizzlies play at Century today at 5 p.m. and host Hillsboro Monday at 5 p.m.
Dayton 17, W. Mennonite 1 (5)
LINCOLN – Rachael Fluke and Sierra Ray each hit home runs, with Fluke going 3-for-4 with four RBI as the Class 3A Pirates defeated the Class 2A/1A Lady Pioneers Monday night at Western Mennonite High School.
Michaela Shouldis went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored for Dayton (11-1, 5-0 Class 3A WVL), which posted seven runs in the third inning and nine runs in the fourth inning. Madison Hull had the only hit of the game for Western Mennonite (8-3, 5-0 Class 2A/1A Special District 3).
The Pirates play at Sheridan today at 5 p.m. The Lady Pioneers play at Toledo today at 4:30 and at Regis Tuesday at 3 p.m.
