Tigard tamers

The McMinnville girls tennis team improved to 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in Class 6A Pacific Conference play with a 7-1 victory over Tigard Wednesday afternoon at the Cowls Street Tennis Courts.

The Grizzlies swept the doubles and won three of four singles matches against the Tigers, with five of the wins coming in straight sets.

Matches began on Tuesday but were halted due to rain. Tigard returned to McMinnville Wednesday and encountered sunny weather.

The Grizzlies’ No. 1 doubles team of senior Molly Olsen and junior Samantha Purdy cruised to victory over Carrie Williams and Hannah Portwood of Tigard, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, McMinnville seniors Kerigan Morton and Nayelly Cervera won a second-set tiebreaker to take the amtch over Ana Tran and Delany Shea of the Tigers, 6-3, 7-6 (6).

Ellie Solem and Lauren Ulvang of McMinnville defeated Kendall Lockwood and Cloe Hogan of Tigard, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles. At No. 4 doubles, juniors Julia Jacobucci and Veronica Marquez thwarted Laci O’Neal and Maria Anderson, 6-0, 5-7, 6-1.

Grizzlies sophomore Shay Bristow survived a tight No. 3 singles match against Caroline Tea of the Tigers, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7). Kelsey Allen of McMinnville defeated Fotni Dorrance of Tigard in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 2 singles; at No. 4 singles, Rachel Legard defeated Hayden Heubner of the Tigers, 7-5, 6-3.

Tigard’s lone win of the match came at No. 1 singles, where Courtney Roshak topped McMinnville’s Caitlan Baker, 6-3, 6-4.

The Grizzlies’ match Thursday at Hillsboro was postponed due to rain. McMinnville’s next scheduled match is at Tualatin on Tuesday.

TIGARD – The Grizzlies tied the Tigers on matches but lost due to game score in Wednesday’s Class 6A Pacific Conference match.

McMinnville (2-2) will play Pacific Conference foe Hillsboro Monday at 4 p.m. at the Cowls Street Tennis Courts in McMinnville.
