Story erred on hospital report

In a recent story on those reports, the News-Register indicated Yamhill County’s Willamette Valley Medical Center and Providence Newberg Medical Center were excluded because they are accredited by The Joint Commission, which does not release its inspection findings.

In fact, they were excluded because they had no reportable patient-care incidents. Others hospitals did, including some accredited by The Joint Commission, and were included as a result.

The Association of Health Care Journalists is also seeking access to routine inspections not resulting in discovery of serious patient care lapses, from The Joint Commission and other agencies, but has not been successful to date. The Joint Commission did indicate that both local hospitals are in good standing.
