Silverton man killed in Polk crash
Clifford E. Fagaly, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:30 p.m. crash, on Highway 22 near its intersection with Red Prairie Road in Polk County. His wife, Kerttu R. Fagaly, 85, was transported to Salem Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Trooper Chad Drew of the Oregon State Police gave this account:
A 2003 Ford van driven by Marcos Antonio Luz, 41, of Woodburn, was westbound on the highway when it crossed the centerline and collided with the Fagalys’ eastbound 2000 Toyota sedan.
The sedan came to rest in a roadside ditch with Clifford Fagaly at the wheel. The van ended up in the westbound traffic lane, where it was struck by a westbound 2012 Dodge pickup driven by Lonny S. Bryant, 51, of Willamina.
Luz was transported to Salem Hospital with serious injuries. Bryant and a passenger, Ruthann Bryant, 49, were transported to the Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville with minor injuries.
Alcohol may have contributed to Luz’ failure to maintain his lane of travel, according to the state police. Seat belt information was not immediately available.
OSP was assisted at the scene by the Sheridan and West Valley fire districts, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
