Sheridan Days headliner a Portland trio

The group only formed a little more than a year ago, but has already established the music chops and retro marketing appeal to generate a fan base. And that base will extend to the West Valley on Saturday, June 13, when Dad Works Hard has been booked as the headliner for this weekend’s Sheridan Days.

The group recently released its debut album, “The Saturday Nite Movie.” It was produced and engineered by Oregon Music Hall of Famer Gregg Williams, a native of McMinnville.

In conjunction with its Sheridan Days performance, the group will distribute a limited number of copies in both CD and vinyl formats.

Dad Works Hard describes its music as “trashy, disco-infused hard rock, with all the shouting, kicking and beer-can-crushing that goes with it, topped with trucker speed.” It terms the sound “reminiscent of old American cars that are somehow still running.”

While much different in style, the band’s raw energy and blue collar appeal resemble that of West Valley favorite Hillstomp, which frequents Willamina’s Wildwood Hotel and the associated MusicFest and Campout.

Hillstomp revives R. L. Burnside-inspired Mississippi blues by adding modern garage rock and punk elements. Dad Works Hard does the same with the dance punk and new wave that emerged from the New York City underground scene in the 1970s.

The band’s affinity for 8-tracks, cheap sunglasses and playing on top of a Ford Galaxie convertible is displayed in its first music video for “White Shoes,” which has already accumulated nearly 70,000 views on YouTube. The track is one of several quick-paced, hard-hitting tracks on “The Saturday Nite Movie” that finish under the three-minute mark.

But the album has a good deal of variety as well, as evidenced by the seven-minute-plus funk jam “Just a Taste.”

Dad Works Hard’s high-octane live sets will surely be embraced by rock fans in attendance Saturday evening.

Opening for the group will be the Seattle-based alternative rock band Attack With Care. The music will get underway at the conclusion of the Grand Parade at Sheridan High School.
