Relay for Life kickoff planned

Organizers of the annual Relay for Life, which honors cancer survivors in the course of raising funds for the American Cancer Society, will kick off the 2014 event Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in the McMinnville Civic Hall, next to city hall at Second and Baker streets. Everyone is welcome, including those new to the event.

Fourteen teams have already signed up for this year’s relay, to be held the Friday and Saturday of June 20 and 21 at Patton Middle School in McMinnville. On the opening afternoon, team members will start walking the track; the walk and related activities will continue until noon the following day.

During the event, there will be music, activities for all ages, a ceremony honoring those who’ve died from cancer and a special lap and din ner celebrating survivors.

This year’s fundraising goal is $100,000, said Co-Chair Jami Fuller. Last year’s raised about $60,000.

Fuller said she hopes 60 teams will participate, typically consisting of groups of friends, relatives, co-workers, students or club members. People of all ages can participate.

She said she also wants to attract 300 survivors this year.

At the kickoff, she said, organizers will discuss ways to participate, offer fundraising tips and describe how the relay works. There also will be prizes, giveaways, music and snacks.

Additional team meetings will be scheduled monthly until the relay.
