Reading avtivities slated in Sheridan
Feb 21, 2014
SHERIDAN — Sheridan's Faulconer-Chapman School is planning a number of activities to mark Read Across America Literacy Week, which runs Feb. 24 to 28.
The week also honors the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the beloved children's author. In his honor, Faulconer-Chapman's kindergarten through eighth-grade students will decorate classroom doors Monday.
On Thursday, they will stage a Read-In. Students will practice their reading skills and listen to people reading to them.
Organizers are seeking volunteers to read to small groups that day. Volunteers need to fill out an application in advance.
For more information, call the school at 971-261-6960.
On Thursday evening, a family fun night is slated to run 5 to 7 p.m. It will feature family activities, a writing workshop, sessions on reading and an after-school parent showcase.
The showcase will run 5:30 to 6:30 in the school cafeteria. Refreshments will be offered for sale.
A book fair, featuring books for sale, will be conducted during school hours all week. It will be extended Thursday through the evening activities.
Two assemblies are also planned. On Wednesday, SisBro Productions will present programs on oceans, pirate ands writing for students in grades K-5. On Friday, a separate assembly will be held for students in grades 6-8.
Faulconer-Chapman students also have created posters that can be seen hanging in downtown business establishments. They are designed to promote Read Across America Literacy Week.
