Partners open Latin American inspired restaurant
Ricardo Antunez and Carmen Borrasé didn’t know each other, but it turned out they shared an interest in renting a vacant restaurant space on McMinnville’s Third Street and they ended up deciding to join forces in the venture. Their restaurant and retail shop, Pura Vida Cocina & Arte, replaces Orchard’s Bistro.
Antunez’s heritage is Mexican, Borrasé’s Costa Rican. They are offering lunch, dinner and happy hour menus featuring dishes from Peru, Cuba, Argentina, Costa Rica and El Salvador, all fashioned out of fresh Northwest ingredients.
Antunez has experience working in restaurants in San Francisco and Salem, and has traveled throughout Central America and the Caribbean. He’s offering local spirits, beers and wines suited to the Latin American fare.
Antunez anticipates customers ordering plates to share. All ingredients will be fresh, he said, including those going into seasonal drinks, and orders are also available on a takeout basis.
Antunez plans to continue his Tacos Los Muertos food cart operation as well, but will limit its appearances to special events, like the McMinnville Downtown Farmers Market.
Including the bar area, the restaurant seats 40. The partners anticipate assembling a crew of five to 10, as business warrants.
In addition to her own paintings, Borrasé is offering an array of Costa Rican items on the shop side, many of them featuring recycled materials. Photographs by John Kerrigan, a former Linfield College professor who has traveled in Costa Rica and Ecuador, are also available.
The restaurant is located at 313 N.E. Third St. It is open for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and dinner from 4 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. The phone is 503-687-2020.
Plans are underway for a new Subway sandwich shop and community event center on Bridge Street in Sheridan, according to City Manager Frank Sheridan.
Sheridan said the plans are being developed by Bahadur Singh, owner of Center Market and Figaro’s Pizza. He said the Subway will feature about 1,300 square feet of space, divided between the kitchen and seating area. He said the event center will feature 1,600 square feet with a small stage — enough to accommodate up to 220.
The buildings housing the new ventures are adjacent to the 24-hour market. They are both owned by Singh.
“He’s going to make a better appearance on that corner,” Sheridan said. “It will look attractive and fit in with the rest of the areas they’re trying to redevelop here.”
