Olympians run away from Grizzlies

Anthony Nunn and Matt Kleinman battered and bruised the McMinnville defense with their legs.

Wyatt Smith beat the Sprague defense with his arm.

Still, the Grizzlies' early miscues -- three turnovers and a missed field goal -- gave the Olympians all the cushion they needed in a 56-35 victory over McMinnville in Friday's Class 6A Greater Valley Conference contest at Wortman Stadium.

Smith, the Grizzlies' sophomore quarterback, completed 24 of 42 passes for 344 yards, throwing three touchdowns and two interceptions. Smith added a 25-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter to bring the score to 7-7, the closest it would get for McMinnville (0-3, 0-3 GVC).

Nevertheless, Sprague (3-0, 3-0 GVC) could never quite shake the Grizzlies. The Olympians led 28-7 late in the second quarter before Smith found Walter Stahl for an eight-yard touchdown pass, cutting Sprague's lead to 28-14. The Olympians led 42-21 before a muffed punt led to a 10-yard touchdown run by Tanner Scanlon; Sprague went three-and-out on the ensuing drive, and Smith responded with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Colton Heidt after a fourth-and-5 conversion from the Olympians' 44-yard line.

But Sprague's rushing attack allowed it to parry every McMinnville thrust. Nunn finished with 21 carries for 152 yards and two touchdowns; Kleinman tallied 136 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries.

The Grizzlies play at North Salem on Sept. 26.

Perrydale 64, Triad 22

PERRYDALE – There were few who doubted that the Class 2A Perrydale Pirates were more then a match for their Class 1A non-league opponents from the Triad School, but games are decided on the field, and the Pirates demonstrated just what had been predicted of them.

Perrydale (3-0) racked up an bevy of touchdowns, nine in all, on their way to a 64-22 shellacking of the visiting Timberwolves in Perrydale on Friday. The Pirates took the oppertunities that Triad (2-1) gave them, putting the ball in the air with ease and efficency as the Timberwolves keyed in on Perrydale’s running attack.

“Our quarterback threw the ball extremely well. We had some open receivers. They were really playing the run with a lot of guys, so we got behind them early for open pass plays,” Pirates coach Chris Gubrud said. “That loosened them up a little bit on defense, we were able to run the ball a little better after that.”

That quarterback, Troy Trembly, completed eight of 12 passes for 166 yards and three scores without a pick. Those three touchdowns were the first three the Pirates put in, and put them up 20-0. Triad managed to get one in, but their onside kick fell to Perrydale’s Keenan Bailey, just as the Pirates intended.

“We knew when they had a certain kicker going that they were going to onside to a certain area,” Gubrud said. “We put guys in that place. We were expecting that.”

Bailey gobbled up the ball and slashed through Triad’s coverage to score Perrydale’s fourth touchdown of the night.

“I knew they were going to onside kick it to me, so I just cradled it and ran as hard as I could,” Bailey said.

The running game finished the rest for the Pirates. Hunter Johnson took six carries for 55 yards and a touchdown that came in the closing stages of the first half and ranked as one of Gubrud’s favorite plays of the game

“Right before halftime. our big fullback made a great run, broke a couple tackles, had a couple stiff-arms and scored,” Gubrud said. “It was an impressive play for momentum. Some brute strength he showed, they couldn’t get him to the ground.”

Brant Barnes led the rushing attack with 24 carries for 165 yards and a score, while Tremblay racked up two scores and 36 yards on five carries. Johnson and Barnes each also caught a pass from Trembly for 34 and 17 yards, respectively.

And while there’s plenty to smile about for Perrydale, Gubrud wanted his defense to play a little bit tighter.

“We didn’t play as well as we’d like to on defense,” he said. “We gave up some things that we practice for and we had some fundamental breakdowns, tackling too high. Overall, when you give up 20 points in an eight-man game, that’s not too bad.”

Taft 40, Sheridan 24

LINCOLN CITY – After a disappointing first half, the Spartans rallied to make a game of their Class 3A West Valley League contest against the Tigers, though they didn’t have enough time left to take the decision.

“It was a dog fight the whole second half,” head coach Brice Ingram said. “If we would have played the whole game like we did the second half, we would have won.”

The Tigers outscored Sheridan 40-6 in the opening half, but the Spartans bounced back for three unanswered second half touchdowns before the clock expired on a 40-24 defeat, Sheridan’s first of the year.

“We made some adjustments. They got confused. We got them deep a few times and held them, we got good field position and we put it in,” Ingram said of his team’s second half. “They were scared. We were threatening to score two other times and just couldn’t get it in.”

Sheridan travels to Amity on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. to face the Warriors.
