Newberg High School student killed in crash

The Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office identified him as Alex Neel Weiler of 949 Seventh St., Dundee.

Capt. Tim Svenson gave this account:

Weiler was southbound in a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban, headed toward Highway 99W. He lost control as he was negotiating a sharp “S” corner in the area of Hidden Springs Road.

“He went off the side of the road, overcorrected, shot across the road and sideswiped a tree,” Svenson said.

“Witnesses, a passerby and a Newberg-Dundee police officer arrived within minutes and reported smoke and fire coming from the vehicle.”

Speed and slick road conditions contributed to the crash, according to Sheriff Jack Crabtree.

In addition to the sheriff’s office and Newberg-Dundee police, the Newberg and Dundee fire departments and Oregon State Police responded. The county’s Victim and Witness Services Program handled family notifications.

Alex, the son of Steve and Staci Weiler, was a member of the Newberg High boys’ cross country and tennis teams, according to district spokesperson Claudia Stewart. He also participated in robotics.

Alex attended C.S. Lewis Academy in Newberg through eighth grade. He has two younger siblings who attend C.S. Lewis.

School counselors will be available throughout this week for students requesting support, Stewart said.

Arrangements are pending. Remembrances and condolences for the Weiler family can be sent to the high school or elementary school offices.
