New owner plans 'cool Mexican street food'

Local chef Ricardo Antunez has taken over the Tacos Los Muertos shop, launched last year by Eric Bechard and Emily Howard.

Antunez previously operated a restaurant called Ricardo’s in McMinnville and worked for La Rambla in McMinnville and Paulée in Dundee. He said his goal was to make the business “a big hit in Mac.”

“We’ll try to set ourselves apart with really cool Mexican street food,” he said. “This is food I love to eat when in Mexico. I hope to share a little of that with the community.”

Antunez makes his own chorizo and tortillas, using blue corn for some of the latter. He plans to purchase as much of his food locally as possible.

The shop is located at 709 N.E. Third St. The phone is 971-267-2892.

Hours have been expanded to 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Sylla McClellan, owner of Third Street Books in downtown McMinnville, has decided to drop her online ordering system after a two-year run. However, she will continue to host a website and accept orders by e-mail.

McClellan said the e-commerce component was “pretty expensive to maintain,” as it requires a high level of security. She said she simply hasn’t been able to generate enough sales to make it pay.

“It didn’t make sense for us,” McClellan said. “I’d rather spend the money for things in the physical store.”

She said areas of immediate focus include the mystery, history and children’s sections.

The store, located at 334 N.E. Third St., is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 503-472-7786.

Shannon Winkle, CEO of Heels In The Rain Social Media, will be the featured speaker at a McMinnville Area Chamber of Commerce Women In Business session set from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8. It will be held at Juliette’s House, 1075 S.W. Cedarwood Ave.

Winkle will discuss tweets, status updates, likes and online friends, and advise attendees about what they should and shouldn’t be doing on today’s most popular social networks.

Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. To RSVP, contact the chamber at 503-472-6196 or e-mail
