New musical to debut Sunday

The new version, “Not in that Business Anymore,” was written by Dana Libonati, McMinnville High School vocal director, and his daughter, Alyssa Gibson, a graduate of Mac High and the American Musical Theater Academy. They worked on the musical for about six months, doing much of the work long-distance since she was living in New York with her husband, Mac High grad Cameron Gibson.

Libonati, who has written children’s musicals, said he is pleased both with the collaboration with his daughter and with the results.

“It was a really cool experience, really fun,” he said. “And it turned out really funny, with great music.”

They were inspired to write the show by Libonati’s father, who died last year. “Oscar,” about a son who tries to go straight after growing up in a family of gangsters, was his favorite movie.

Libonati and several family members — his wife, Kim; son, Anthony; brother, Glen; and sister-in-law, Sandy — will be joined by local actors for the read and sing through. The cast includes Chris Benham-Bertolini, Ashley Benham-Bertonlini, Chelsey Janzen, Austin Ewing, Bethany Mason, Craig Kizer and Walt Haight, with Tim Duerfeldt serving as narrator.
