Net gains in split decision
Facing its rival on its home court for the first time this season, the McMinnville boys tennis team hoped to show Newberg what it had learned from a month ago.
The Tigers ended up defeating the Grizzlies, 7-1, in Friday’s Class 6A Pacific Conference match at the Cowls Street Tennis Courts. To McMinnville coach Alex Martin, the team showed improvement from its early-season performance against Newberg, an 8-0 sweep on March 18.
“We’ve talked about getting better in the second half (of the league season),” Martin said. “We went from winning zero matches to winning one match. We went from winning two sets to winning four sets. That’s real positive for us.”
The Grizzlies’ No. 1 doubles team of Edoardo Colombari and Daniel Post secured McMinnville’s only victory of the afternoon, against Matt Freeman and Jacob Pendergraph of Newberg. Colombari and Post dropped the first set before winning the next two for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 victory.
“They learned a lot about how to play with each other,” Martin said.
At No. 4 singles, McMinnville’s Mason Wennerstrom took Newberg’s Josh Ice to the wire before falling, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Tigers No. 1 singles player Barry Vernon defeated Patrick Loumann, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Micah Stoltzfus of Newberg defeated Drew Altringer of McMinnville, 6-1, 6-1, while Grizzlies No. 3 singles player Kyle Nash fell to Braden Milroy of the Tigers, 6-0, 6-1.
Mac’s No. 4 doubles team of K.J. Smith and Elliot Morrison went to three sets in their match against Newberg’s Aaron Secrist and Josh Rapp. Ultimately, Secrist and Rapp prevailed in a tie-breaking third set, 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.
The Tigers’ No. 2 doubles team of Matt Staples and Ercoli Crugnale defeated McMinnville’s Peyton Burke and Zane Stellflug, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Newberg’s Kory Favarra and Isidro Martinez defeated Spencer Stillwell and Ehren Cahill of McMinnville, 6-3, 6-4.
The Grizzlies (4-5, 3-5 Pacific) play at Forest Grove today at 4 p.m.
