Free hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. Booths will offer other snacks for sale, including freezes, cotton candy and snowcones.
Prizes and giveaways are planned. The Hometown Classics Band will perform.
Agency booths will offer safety information, child identification kits and details about Neighborhood Watch programs. Oregon Fish and Wildlife, the Carlton Fire Department and the Oregon National Guard will also have displays, and the National Guard will be setting up a climbing wall. For children, face-painting, basketball, horseback rides and rocket-building will be offered, along with rides in a tethered hot air balloon.
This is the 30th anniversary of National Night Out. The annual prevention effort encourages community members to become acquainted and band together against crime both informally and through the Neighborhood Watch.
National Night Out also strengthens the partnership between police and the community, said Carlton Police Chief Kevin Martinez.
Last year’s Carlton-Yamhill National Night Out event won a national award. Martinez said he wants this year’s event to be even better, sending the message that fighting crime is a year-round, community effort.
“We want to establish that relationship so if we have problems, we already have a connection that gives us the eyes, ears and knowledge of the community,” Martinez said. “Citizens feel safe, it improves livability and we can collectively come together to reduce and prevent crime.”
He said a positive, open relationship between police and the community also sends a clear message to criminals: Stay away. “That deters a lot of bad activity,” he said.
