'My Abandonment' chosen for 2013 MacReads

This is the ninth year for MacReads, a community-wide book reading and discussion program. Schools, book clubs and individuals from throughout Yamhill County are invited to participate.

Copies of “My Abandonment” are available at Third Street Books, the McMinnville Public Library and the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield College.

Local discussions will be scheduled throughout the spring. Rock will cap off the program with a talk slated for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Nicholson Library.

“My Abandonment” focuses on a 13-year-old girl living secretly with her father in Forest Park in Portland. Their lives change when they are discovered by a hiker.

The book won the Alex Award and Utah Book Award, and has been published in several other countries, including Turkey.

Rock earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Yale University. He teaches creative writing at Reed College.

He is also the author of “The Bewildered,” “The Ambidextris,” “This is the Place” and “Carnival Wolves.”

MacReads is sponsored by the Linfield English Department, Nicholson Library, the McMinnville Public Library and Third Street Books. For more information, contact Susan Barnes Whyte, director of the Linfield library at 503-883-2517.
