McDaniel, Mac shine at Ore. Relays

EUGENE – Nic McDaniel set a personal record in the 800 meters, Tim Tatton and Amber Bonds placed in multiple events and the McMinnville track and field team scored 31 points at the Oregon Relays, held Friday and Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The Grizzlies’ point total was 17th-best among the 51 teams that scored points for top-eight finishes at the relays. Federal Way (Wash.) was the meet’s team winner, with 111.5 points, followed by Eastlake (Wash.) with 95. Sheldon was in third place with 92.5 points.

McDaniel, a senior, finished third in the boys’ 800 in 1 minute, 55.45 seconds, a personal best by two seconds. It is the second-fastest time posted by a Class 6A runner this season.

Tatton threw the discus 156 feet, 1 inch on his second attempt, taking second in that event to Marshall McKown of Douglas (161-3). The senior also threw 183-7 in the boys’ javelin competition, good for fourth place, and threw the hammer 163-2 to finish fifth among high school boys. Both Tatton’s javelin throw and his hammer throw are personal bests.

Bonds, also a senior, threw the hammer 116-9 on her fifth attempt to finish sixth among high school girls. She also claimed a seventh-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 108-4 on her final attempt.

Sophomore Montanna Gubrud notched a season best in the girls’ long jump, taking sixth place with a mark of 16-10.

The Grizzlies’ season continues with the McMinnville Invitational, to be held at Wortman Stadium on Friday. Field events begin at 3 p.m., with track events to follow at 4 p.m.
